Magnesium die casting is a manufacturing process that involves the injection of molten magnesium into a mold cavity under high pressure. The process goes through five steps: mold preparation, melting and injection, cooling and solidification, and ejection. It is commonly used to produce intricate metal parts made from magnesium alloys with precision.

Echofast Custom Service—Magnesium Die Casting

Magnesium die casting is regarded as an ideal choice for the production of thin-walled, net-shape, and near-net-shape castings. As a reliable partner in mold making, Echofast can manufacture magnesium die castings with strong dimensional stability, high tolerances and great strength. At Echofast, the material can be fully preheated and degassed before the process of die casting to ensure the quality of the molten magnesium alloy.

To avoid quality effects such as bubbles in the casting, we take a series of measures to control the injection volume and pressure during the die casting process. A range of finishing options are available to improve the strength and hardness of the casting. We provide consumers with integrated services to meet their diverse needs, including consultation and design, tooling and mold design, material selection, die casting process, finishing operations, quality assurance, packaging and delivery.

Types of Magnesium Die Casting

Hot Chamber Die Casting

Hot chamber die casting, also known as gooseneck casting, where the injection mechanism is immersed in a bath of molten metal within a furnace. It is a manufacturing process for the creation of die cast parts made from metals with low melting points. The common metals used in the process include zinc, magnesium, and some lead-based alloys.

Hot chamber magnesium die casting is a highly efficient production process ideal for manufacturing large volumes of parts due to the shorter cycle times. The molten magnesium demonstrates good fluidity as it is forced into the mold cavity. This makes the process suitable for thin-wall castings with demanding aesthetic requirements, such as mobile phone and handheld computer casings. However, hot chamber die casting is more expensive than cold chamber die casting. This is primarily due to the continuous exposure to elevated temperatures, which increases the likelihood of corrosion and results in higher maintenance expenses for die casting machinery in hot chamber operations.

Cold Chamber Die Casting

Cold chamber die casting, also known as cold casting, is a manufacturing process used for metals with high melting points, such as magnesium, aluminum, and copper. This process requires an outside furnace and a ladle to pour the molten metal.

Magnesium alloys are well suited for both hot chamber and cold chamber die casting processes due to their higher melting point. Less maintenance is required in cold chamber die casting, making the process more cost-effective. However, the cycle times in cold chamber die casting are longer, and the product quality is lower compared to hot chamber die casting.

Materials Of Magnesium Die Casting

At Echofast, we meticulously select magnesium alloys based on the specific requirements of our customers. We have the expertise to adjust the alloy composition to achieve optimal toughness, ductility, and impact resistance tailored to the application of the casting. Advantages Of Magnesium Die Casting

Magnesium die castings have a lot of advantages. Listed below are main advantages:

  • Lightweight: Magnesium alloys are among the lightest of all structural materials, with a density of approximately 1.8 g/cm³. Compared with steel and aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys are approximately 30% lighter in weight while maintaining excellent mechanical properties and durability. Magnesium die castings are ideal for applications where weight reduction is critical.
  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Magnesium die-cast parts demonstrate outstanding strength-to-weight ratios, leading to great performance in structural applications. They offer robust dimensional stability, lightweight characteristics, and exceptional strength.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Magnesium die-cast parts are more resistant to corrosion in dry environment due to the formation of an oxide layer on their surface. As  a result, magnesium die casting is a good choice for applications in both dry and corrosive environments, notably in the automotive, electronics, and sporting goods industries.
  • High Thermal Conductivity: Magnesium alloys are known for their high thermal conductivity(~150 W/mK), which are suitable for applications requiring efficient heat dissipation.
  • Good Machinability: Magnesium die cast parts are relatively easy to machine, saving time and cost. It is a great option for applications where too much secondary machining is required.
